Course Management & Decision Making

"175 out, and I'm not even considering the 6-iron."

You probably know someone like this. You might be someone like this.

175 out, trees down the left, water short right, flag tucked six paces from the edge. The smart shot is a 7-iron to the fat of the green and a two-putt for par. That's not the shot I see. I see the one where I thread a 4-iron through a gap the size of a letterbox and walk off with a story for the clubhouse.

Sometimes it comes off, and I'll tell that story for a month. What I won't mention is the other nine times, the one at the 14th that found the water and turned a routine par into a card-wrecking seven.

I'm not reckless. I'm just playing the course I wish was in front of me instead of the one that's actually there. Every round turns into a series of high-wire moments instead of a plan I'm sticking to, and I can't always tell you why I picked the shot I picked, only that it felt right at the time.

I'll lay up. In theory. I'm drawn to the spectacular shot over the sensible one, I judge a round by its highlights rather than its number, and if you ask me to explain the decision after the fact, I'll struggle.

If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth finding out how far it actually runs. The free assessment covers this alongside seven other areas that shape a round, and takes about eight minutes.
