I shot 40 on the front nine, and then 52 on the back.

Same swing, same clubs, same course, so where did twelve shots go?

Shoot 40 on the front and 52 on the back, it's not your swing, it's how you react

I'd been playing well until a double bogey on nine. Then, on the back nine, one lost ball turned into a treble, and every bad hole made the next one worse, and before long I just wanted to get off the course.

My swing hadn't changed at all, but what had was every decision I made and how I reacted to each shot that went wrong.

You see, most golf improvement is built around the swing because it's the part you can see. But that round wasn't lost in the swing, and I'd bet plenty of yours weren't either.

After crying into my pint, I went home and built Golf Clarity. Its aim is to show you where you lose shots, and that is usually in the choices you make and the way you respond when things turn tough.

It's rarely just one bad shot

Your round is shaped by what happens around the shot as much as what happens during it.

The decision you make on the tee, what you tell yourself walking to the ball, what one bad hole does to the next three.

Golf Clarity assesses eight areas that decide whether your game holds together or comes apart, and each one shows up on the course as a pattern you'll probably recognise, either in yourself or in someone you play with.

Meet the patterns that can take over your round.

Every golfer has a version of themselves that turns up when the round starts to matter. It might be the one who reaches for the driver on a hole that never needed it, or the one who spends the back nine trying to win back a single lost ball.

None of them are bad golfers, they're just playing the moment instead of the round. Here are the eight you're most likely to meet.

Score awareness and round management

Six holes left, three shots to play with, and your mind is already on the total rather than the next shot.

Response to setbacks and recovery

A bad hole seems to call for an immediate response, ideally one shot that wins everything back.

Practice structure and skills transfer

Technical reliability

The swing worked three holes ago, but it could surely do with one more adjustment.

Mental approach and performance discipline

One poor shot becomes the evidence for a full review of your ability to play golf.

Expectation management and self-awareness

The next good shot is always about to happen, and anything to the contrary is treated as temporary.

Course management and decision making

Shot execution under pressure

It starts with a Snapshot

After that round I wanted to know exactly where those twelve shots went. The Snapshot is a free assessment that puts you in 24 situations you'll recognise from your own rounds.

There's no swing video and no stats to enter, just straight answers about how you actually play, and it's completely free.

What your Snapshot report shows you

Once you've answered the 24 questions, your report opens straight away, with a copy sent to your inbox.

It tells you where your game sits overall on a five-level scale, from Chasing the Round to Playing with Clarity, and how each of the eight areas compares. You'll see what's already working for you, which areas are most likely costing you shots, and a map showing whether the bigger gains sit in how you plan your round or how you handle it once it's underway.

It then points you to the one area worth going deeper on first.

Go deeper on the area costing you most

Your free report shows you where to look. A Deeper Assessment shows you what's actually going on in that area and what to do about it.

You answer twenty questions about one part of your game, which takes most golfers ten to fifteen minutes. Your report is written around your own answers. It shows how the pattern plays out in your rounds, which part of it is holding you back most, and where you sit on the five levels. It then gives you a plan for the next step up, with a drill for the range, a drill for the course, and a simple way to tell whether it's working.

Start with the area your Snapshot points you to, or pick whichever one you already know is costing you. Each assessment is a one-off £19.99, with no subscription, and your report arrives in your inbox as soon as you finish.

Find out where your shots are going

Most golfers never find out why their game falls apart, so the same holes keep going wrong in the same way. I didn't know where those twelve shots on the back nine went until I went looking. The free Snapshot takes around eight minutes and shows you what's actually happening: where your game holds up, where it gives way, and the one area most likely to be costing you shots.
